I don’t want to be Old...I want to be New!

One evening, my 4-year-old daughter started demanding my lipstick. She wanted to apply it just like her Mother did. I started to explain to her that these are not stuff to be used by baby’s like her. I told her she was too young for it, and that she could use it only when she was old enough. At that she just retorted, ‘I don’t want to be old, I want to be New’. Her innocent statement caught me off-guard.
I was compelled to give it a thought. There was so much meaning hidden in that simple statement which came out directly from a child’s mouth who was yet to experience the realities of life. It was an in-manipulated and unadulterated thought straight out of an innocent mind. Those words also reflected a lot of positivity whereby her statement clearly meant that she always wanted to be the ‘New’ her and never be an ‘Old’ her.
Do we grown-ups really make life difficult and unpleasant for ourselves? It would be so good if with every passing birthday we could celebrate the newness in each of us rather than moan secretively about growing older.
Maybe a paradigm shift could help bring a change in the perspective of how we look forward to each passing year of our life. Instead of holding ourselves back due to age and its limitations, we should instead push ourselves even further as each years of life pass.
With every passing minute, every passing day and every passing year we get new experiences and keep learning new things in life, then why do we label ourselves as Older rather than Newer?!
In fact, I would be proud to say I am a Newer me because of all the experiences and learnings that I gain and would continue to be Newer as my age increases.
So next time before asking someone ‘How old are you?’ pause and give it a thought. Maybe you would want to ask them instead ‘How New are you?’ J

  6. Hi shonima.. indeed very thoughtful ..it really makes us think how new are we.
..life feels monotonous when we start thinking we are old...we gotta imbibe this "new" approach and make life a lot more bright..
